Elwyn Vaughan, a local campaigner said:
“Cymdeithas yr Iaith has been present at the initial meetings of the Working Group and have taken the opportunity to be part of a process of making positive changes in terms of the Welsh language and communities in Powys.
“Having said that, we have our own set of calls that we will launch in a rally at the Eisteddfod on August the 4th.”
The set of calls Cymdeithas yr Iaith have put together has a number of recommendations to strengthen the Welsh language in the community - some to put in place instantly, and some over time.
As a basis to the set of calls, that encompass various aspects of the council's work including planning, leisure, education and helath; are core principals that call for the council to recognise the seriousness of the situation and its readiness to do something about it.
Elwyn Vaughan added:
“There will be an opportunity for everyone to see the set of calls and give their impressions in the rally at the eisteddfod. Dafydd Iwan, Arwyn Groe a Tamsin Davies of Cymdeithas yr Iaith will speak on education, planning and give a brief summary of our calls.
“We acknowledge that its not only the council that needs to change but are calling on them to lead by example; and some of the calls require them to work with various organisation and groups across the county - drawing people to use the language as an everyday, working language. The rally is just the beginning, hopefully we can all work together to strengthen the language in the county.”
