Lidl: Welsh Language Commissioner must raise awareness of language rights

Lidl's u-turn shows the Welsh Language Commissioner should be more proactive in raising awareness of new language rights created by recent legislation, according to campaigners Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg.

Since the measure was passed, it has been illegal for individuals or companies to interfere with individuals' freedom to use Welsh with each other. The movement has called on the Welsh Language Comissionner to write to every member of the CBI and the FSB informing them of the change in the law.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith language spokesperson Manon Elin James said,

"At first sight, it seems that the Commissioner's work with Lidl has made an impact. However, almost four years have passed since introducing the language measure, it's obvious that companies operating in Wales haven't got the message. Part of the commissioner's role is to promote the new law, and we're calling on her to do so urgently, in order to prevent any other policy statements that interfere with the rights of the people of Wales in addition to breaking the law."

Cymdeithas' officers will meet with the Commissioner on Thursday in order to discuss the matter. Manon Elin James added: "It's essential that the Commissioner fulfils her role by informing companies like Lidl of the law in Wales and their duties in terms of ensuring services and respecting the rights of Welsh speakers. Thanks to pressure from campaigners, the Commissioner is successfully changing Lidl's policies: something she should do systematically with every supermarket chain, and other companies."
