Two members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith were bailed by Cardiff magistrates court today following their appearance on a charge of burglary - breaking into the office of a Tory MP, which is shared by the local AM, with intention of painting a slogan on the wall calling for assurances for the future of S4C. They will both have to return to court on the 4th of April at 9.45am to face a full trial.Jamie Bevan 34 of Merthyr Tudful and Heledd Williams 20 of Nant Peris were arrested following breaking into the office of the Conservative Member of Parliament in Whitchurch, Cardiff, early yesterday morning (Sunday 06/03/11). The pair immediately took full responsibility for their action.Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"The office of the Conservative Member of Parliament in Cardiff was targeted as part of the National campaign, following a long period of campaigning and lobbying by Cymdeithas yr Iaith that included a large rally in Cardiff which was attended by over 2,000 people before Christmas, tens of meetings all over Wales, many thousands of names collected on a petition opposing the cuts to S4C and numerous letters sent to Welsh Members of Parliament urging them to secure the future for S4C."Cymdeithas yr Iaith is concerned that the present joint plan between the British Government and the BBC, which would mean cuts of 40% in real terms and a BBC take-over of S4C, threatens the future of the Welsh channel. Moreover they feel that the Westminster Government does not consider the opinions of the people of Wales at all.Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg added:"Members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith don't take such serious action lightly. The British Government has disregarded the opinion of the people of Wales from the start of this process. They came to a last minute decision on the future of S4C, without any consultation with S4C nor Ministers in Wales: and recently Jeremy HUnt has ignored calls from the four main Welsh parties for a full review of S4C before making a decision. The fact that some Conservative Assembly Members have spoken against their own Westminster's party's plans is significant."The campaign group has warned that they will continue with their campaign until assurances are given on the channel's independence and funding.
