The Welsh Language Society Entertainment Team will launch their latest gig project towards the end of November as the first ever ‘Taith Tafod’ tour is held.
The Society have led the way in terms of promoting Welsh language music for decades. They have been holding gigs at the annual National Eisteddfod since the 1970s, as well as organising gigs locally throughout the country during the rest of the year. In recent years they have established successful monthly music slots in both Cardiff with the Abri evenings, and Aberystwyth with the Naws gigs.Recently, the entertainment team have recognised a gap in the scene which needs to be filled, as Entertainment Officer Owain Schiavone explains:"There are a great deal of gigs being held these days, which is great of course, but there’s not that much of a structure to them. The idea of the tour is for it to develop into a highlight of the gig calendar and something for bands to aim at and audiences to look forward to."They believe the tour will be beneficial to both bands and record labels. Owain commented:"There is a need to develop proper headliners at the moment and I believe these tours will raise the profile of artists nationally. We also aim to take some pressure off labels who are under pressure to organise gigs to promote CD’s when it’s not really their role. We hope to keep close contact with the labels and use bands who are releasing new material."The Society hope to release information regarding the bands performing on the first tour plus the exact dates and location in the next few weeks, so watch this space!
