No point in a language strategy without an action plan

At a Tynged yr Iaith Sir Gâr (Fate of the Language in Carmarthenshire) meeting to discuss Carmarthenshire Council's five-year language strategy, Cymdeithas yr Iaith has asked whether the strategy will be no more than a tick box exercise or whether it will be implemented.

Addressing the meeting, Sioned Elin, chair of Cymdeithas in Carmarthenshire said:
"We are grateful that councillors and council officers were at our meeting today to discuss the strategy - and that we have a strategy at all. This will lay the foundation for the Welsh language in the county for the next five years. Although the aims are focused on making Welsh the main language of the county again, there is no action plan for achieving this. Without a plan there is a danger that the strategy will be no more than a tick box exercise.
We are halfway to the next Census, there is a danger that we will see an even greater decline in the number of Welsh speakers in the county unless there is a clear action plan and timetable for implementing the strategy. "

Carmarthenshire County Council's language strategy will be presented to the Executive Board to be accepted on the 17th October.
