Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg - The Welsh Language Society - will present a petition to Heritage Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas tomorrow (Monday March 3 2008) calling on him to keep his promise to establish a Welsh language daily newspaper. Over a 1,000 people have signed the petition which has only been running for a limited period of a fortnight.
Here is the wording of the petition:"We call on the Welsh Assembly Government to take urgent steps to impliment its promise to establish a Welsh language daily newspaper as included in the One Wales Coalition Agreement: 'We will expand the funding and support for Welsh medium magazines and newspapers, including the establishment of a Welsh language daily newspaper.' We call on the Government to make a new announcement that sufficient funding is to made available to establish a national independendt daily newspaper in Welsh, in accordance with the research carried out by experienced organizations in the field."Hywel Griffiths, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith said:"We are extremely concerened that this Government does not seem capable of taking its responsibility towards the future of the Welsh language seriously. We now call on the Minister to demonstrate that his Government has the political will and ambition to go beyond its rheototric and announce a definite timetable for introducing a strong new Welsh Language Act which will ensure official status for the language, Welsh langage rights and a Commissioner for the language. We will not be satisfied with any less."
