meic.jpgLocal peace groups are encouraging people to attend a Gig for International Peace at the Eisteddfod in Wrexham.on the eve of Hiroshima Remembrance Day.On Friday 5th August, there will be a minute's silence at midnight at Central Station Venue in the town centre to remember those who died 66 years ago. It will be an especially poignant event as the National Eisteddfod was also held in the Wrexham area (Rhosllanerchrugog) in that year of 1945, and the Armistice was announced from the Eisteddfod stage. Performing at the gig will be a host of Welsh and international Meic Stevens including, Tecwyn Ifan, a Lleuwen Steffan and Carlos Jesus Morales from Chile.Tickets for the evening are on sale for £9 each online from cymdeithas.org/steddfod and in person from Yales Cafe Wrexham, Awen Meirion, Bala, Elfair Rhuthun, and from Cymdeithas offices in Caernarfon, Aberystwyth and Cardiff.A spokesperson on behalf of Wrexham Peace & Justice Forum said:"We are delighted to support Cymdeithas yr Iaith's initiative of a gig for peace during this year's National Eisteddfod in Wrexham, particularly as it will take place on the anniversary of Hiroshima, a reminder to us all of the vital need to find peaceful solutions to conflicts."Ieuan Roberts, one of the organisers of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) gigs during the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham added:"Cymdeithas yr Iaith has always placed the struggle for the Welsh language and the future of our communities in an international context. We live in a world where great military and economic powers are destroying communities - their culture and their environment - throughout the world, and are imposing their will through force. This is why Cymdeithas yr iaith has always supported the International Peace movement and has opposed the use of military force as a means of "problem-solving"."An exciting line-up of bands have signed up to the cause of Peace for this gig. Welsh Folk and Rock legend is returning from a stay in Canada to headline the gig, and sing agian live his first-ever recording - "Yr Eryr a'r Golomen" (The Eagle and the Dove) released originally in 1967 as an anti-Vietnam-war song. Tecwyn Ifan is another prominent artist in the Peace Movement, and Gwilym Morus has toured with Palestinian singers. The gig will have an international flavour as Lleuwen's band includes musicians from Brittany, and Carlos Jesus Morales from Chile will also be performing. The presence of young bands Sen Segur and Tom ap Dan shows that the Peace Movement is alive and well in young Wales.""There will be 7 hours of music calling for International Peace and at midnight Meic Stevens will lead everyone in observing a minute's silence as we enter Hiroshima Remembrance Day. The gig is being supported by a number of Pece Movements, and we are encouraged that the local Wrexham Peace and Justice Forum have declared their support."
