Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society) has called on AMs to reinstate Aled Roberts as an Assembly Member following the linguistic discrimination against him.The language group is asking for a formal apology from the Presiding Officer and Electoral Commission for his treatment and the delays in resolving the matter. Mr Roberts received incorrect information when he made his application to be a candidate because he did so in Welsh.Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg Bethan Williams commented:"Once the Electoral Commission admitted their error, Aled Roberts should have been reinstated immediately. It is an absolute disgrace that he has been disqualified for weeks and subject to a police Investigation for having carried out his business in the medium of Welsh.""This is institutional prejudice against the Welsh language. It's another example of the tokenistic bilingualism which public bodies exercise in order to tick boxes in their language plans.""Too many Public Bodies ensure that their English-language documents and websites are correct, and merely translate into Welsh as and when they get around to doing so.""The Electoral Commissions behaviour has been appalling in this case. They have treated providing information in Welsh in a second-rate fashion. If Aled Roberts were expelled for using Welsh, it would be one of the worst cases of linguistic discrimination in Welsh history.""We as a society have drawn attention to the fact that the Assembly is moving away from being a Welsh language body, with less Welsh heard in the chamber. Even its official Record of Proceedings is no longer fully bilingual. All these things undermine the use of Welsh."
