Welsh language campaigners will hold a football match dressed as David Cameron and top BBC boss Mark Thompson in protest against cuts to S4C, ahead of two party conferences in Cardiff today (Saturday 5th March). The pressure group will join a march with other unions and protest groups against the Westminster Government cuts as the Conservative and Liberal Democrats conferences take place in the capital. Cymdeithas are accusing the Government and the BBC of playing with the future of S4C by planning a BBC takeover of the channel.Bethan Williams of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"S4C's future is like a ball being kicked about by the BBC and the Government in London. The leaders of every major party in Wales have unanimously called on the government in London to halt their plans for S4C and to conduct a full review of the channel in order to make a sensible decision about its future. Jeremy Hunt [Westminster Culture Secretary] has ignored these requests. The British Government didn't consult anyone from Wales on their slash-and-burn plans - they've treated us with contempt."
Cymdeithas also criticised the BBC who see them as co-conspirators in the plans. As the talks between the BBC and S4C over S4C's future continue behind closed doors, Cymdeithas are very concerned that the BBC and the government are continuing to ignore Wales.Bethan Williams added:"The views of the people of Wales have been totally disregarded by the two parties governing in London. We, the public, should be told what is being planned for the future of the channel they fought so hard to get. Members throughout the regions have been protesting against the plans of the government and the BBC; this is another event showing that we will not be treating this as a game."S4C is facing cuts of over 40% in real terms and a BBC takeover which will totally undermine the channel's independence. Cymdeithas has been running a campaign encouraging people not to pay their TV licence until assurances of S4C's independence and sufficient funding are placed in statute.
