Welsh language protestors have targeted the constituency office of the UK Culture Secretary in protest against cuts to S4C and to merge the channel with the BBC today (Wednesday, 15th December). Three campaigners placed posters on Jeremy Hunt MP's office in Hindhead, Surrey. The posters state: "He [Jeremy Hunt] wants to kill the only Welsh Language TV channel in the world." Bethan Williams, Chair of Welsh language campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:"Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg campaigned to establish S4C in the 1970s with many imprisoned for refusing to pay the TV licence, we are a non-violent organisation which uses direct action as a last resort. Our members have been so enraged by the Government's treachery that they are willing to take serious steps to save the only Welsh language TV channel in the world. Tory politicians promised before the election that the channel would be safe in their hands, it's now clear that they weren't telling the truth.""S4C is facing real term cuts of over 40% to its funding, a BBC takeover and slash-and-burn powers in the hands of the Ministers in Westminster. Jeremy Hunt hasn't given a second thought for what that means for us in Wales.""Jeremy Hunt didn't consult anyone from Wales about his last-minute plan for the BBC to takeover our only Welsh language TV channel. This is proof that the Tories don't have any interest in our culture here in Wales nor the people's voice either. The BBC will takeover the channel - it's a complete insult."S4C must be taken out of the Public Bodies Bill. We as campaigners are calling for complete editorial and managerial independence for the channel without interference from the BBC or the Government. An independent funding formula for the Welsh language channel, based on inflation, and protected in statute, is also essential to ensure fair funding to create Welsh language programmes of a high standard. We acknowledge that the channel could perform better - that's why we are campaigning for a new S4C, but that won't be possible under Jeremy Hunt's plans."
