Language Bill should be strengthened for the benefit of the people of Wales - Manon Elin

In response to Alun Davies' comments on the Welsh Langugae Standards, Manon Elin, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith's language rights group, said: "The Minister for the Welsh Language has said he wants to build on the Standards system, and we welcome that. What is more, we see it is necessary to strengthen the Welsh Language Measure to include the private sector, and to include the unquestionable right to use the language in every aspect of life on the face of the bill – which would put flesh on the bones of the existing Standards system.

Ceredigion Council's Cabinet will meet tomorrow (Tuesday 8th November) to discuss the future of schools in the Aeron Valley. Cymdeithas yr Iaith has called on councillors to postpone their decision until a key announcement is made by the Government's Secretary for Education on rural schools next week. Heledd Gwyndaf is the new Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith

A mother from Talgarreg in Ceredigion has been elected as the new Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith following the organisation's annual general meeting over the weekend. Heledd Gwyndaf was born in Bangor and spent time on the Llyn Peninsula. She moved to the south of Wales while relatively young and went to Ysgol y Dderwen, Carmarthen, Ysgol y Strade, Llanelli and Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi. She attended Bangor University to study History and Welsh before going to the United States to earn a master's degree in Teaching and Learning Theories.

Questions over language strategy

Figures showing that the number of Welsh speaking workers in some of Ceredigion's public institutions has declined since 2015 have raised questions about Ceredigion County Council's language strategy. In a letter to the Chief Executive and Leader of Ceredigion Council, Cymdeithas yr Iaith notes a number of gaps in the strategy, that has an emphasis on maintaining existing activity rather than building on it and developing further.
