Children in the Neath Port Talbot area could be the only ones in Wales denied the right to swimming lessons in Welsh following the local council’s legal challenge to a new law. Neath Port Talbot Council has mounted a challenge to over fifty Welsh Language Standards, regulations that create new rights to receive services in Welsh, more than any other council in the country. They are also the only local authority to challenge a duty that would create a right for children to receive swimming lessons in Welsh.

  Language campaigners have welcomed the news that there will be no cuts to S4C's funding from the television licence fee. Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has called for a long-term funding formula as well as devolving broadcasting to Wales. The Conservative Party's 2015 general election manifesto promised to 'safeguard' S4C's funding.

Language campaigners have called on the Education Minister to commit to expanding the work of the Welsh-medium education provider Coleg Cymraeg following the announcement this afternoon that will mean smaller cuts to the higher education sector than expected.

In light of the fact that Pembrokeshire County Council intends to challenge some of the Welsh Language Standards, Cymdeithas yr Iaith has highlighted the fact that two new Welsh schools are to be opened, and questioned what example the Council itself is setting. The Welsh Language Standards are requirements set on all local authorities by the Welsh language Commissioner. Bethan Williams, area officer for Cymdeithas yr Iaith in Dyfed said:
