Welsh language campaigners have raised questions following news that Pembrokeshire Council plans to consult afresh on the re-organisation of Welsh-medium education in the Mid and North West of the county in an extraordinary council meeting today (September 10th).

Following Ceredigion County Council's Cabinet's decision today to publish a statutory notice to close Ysgol Llangynfelyn in North Ceredigion, Bethan Williams, Dyfed organiser for Cymdeithas yr Iaith said: "We congratulate parents, children and the community of Llangynfelyn on their persistent campaign to keep the school open. Many of the families have moved to the area, but they have become an active part of the community, and the school is their main contact with the Welsh language and culture.

Keeping a promise to open a new Welsh medium starter class in Grangetown this month would be evidence that Cardiff Council's leader is 'serious about supporting the Welsh language', according to local language campaigners.

In view of increasing rumour that Ceredigion County Council is holding confidential discussions with developers to allow a large number of houses on the site of Llandysul schools, Cymdeithas yr Iaith has called on the Council to “open its doors” and conduct a public meeting to ask the views of the town's people on how to develop the site to ensure services and employment for local people rather than housing for newcomers

During a demonstration outside the Welsh Government stand at the Eisteddfod in Meifod on Friday 7th August, members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith have dumped an old car at the entrance to the stand with the words "Cymraeg Ail Iaith" ("Welsh as a second language") painted on it.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith has welcomed the fact that a framework for the Powys' Welsh language Task Group's work has been agreed to saying it is a positive development that needs building on. Elwyn Vaughan, a local campaigner said: “Cymdeithas yr Iaith has been present at the initial meetings of the Working Group and have taken the opportunity to be part of a process of making positive changes in terms of the Welsh language and communities in Powys.
