In a letter to John Whittingdale, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, regarding possible cuts to S4C's funding, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has said that the Government was 'ignoring' the Welsh language and that they are ‘misunderstanding' the nature of S4C.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith have condemned what they claim are disparaging comments made by Carmarthenshire Chief Executive Officer Mark James in an article advertising two new job opportunities at the County Council.

Ceredigion members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith have welcomed the fact that Ceredigion Ceredigion Council has voted to keep a condition requiring language impact assessments of specific developments. The campaigners also called on the Welsh Government to provide clearer planning guidelines. Planning legislation was passed recently that establishes the Welsh language a statutory consideration but the Government has not yet issued guidelines to explain how to implement the new law.

A leading language group has urged Cardiff Council to place the Welsh language at the heart of city life at the launch of its "Siarter Caerdydd" (Cardiff Charter) in Tafwyl today.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has expressed its concern with a statement by the Welsh Government about changes to the way Welsh is taught in schools today.    Responding to the statement, Ffred Ffransis, education spokesperson for Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, commented:

Cymdeithas yr Iaith have called for all closures of Welsh-medium village schools to be halted until research has been carried out into the effect of closures during the last decade on the Welsh language and Welsh-speaking communities. During a meeting held by Cymdeithas yr Iaith in Carmarthen over the weekend, a senior County Council officer called on the Government to get rid of the subject "Welsh as a Second Language" and instead implement in full the recommendations of the Prof Sioned Davuies Committee that all pupils should be taught Welsh as their own language on a single continuum of increasing levels. The call was made at a meeting attended by 60 delegates of county-wide bodies to question leading councillors and officers about the strategy  to develop Welsh-langugae education.
