Welsh language campaignes will hold a rally in Caernarfon today (Saturday, 4th December), against the proposed cuts to S4C, and the cuts in general, which they claim will damage community life in Wales.Speakers at the demonstration will include Arfon MP Hywel Williams, Silyn Roberts from UNISON, David Donovan technician's union BECTU, Hywel Roberts public sector union the PCS, Dafydd Iwan, singer Ceri Cunnington and Councillor Marc Jones from the group north Wales against the cuts. Plaid Cymru President Jill Evans will also be present, following her announcement that she will refuse to pay her TV licence because of the threat to S4C's future.Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society)'s hope is to form a broad alliance against the cuts in several communities across Wales. Robin Crag, from the language campaign group said:"It's vital that we as a group oppose these cuts, cuts by a government in London which doesn't give a damn about Wales. The Government has treated Wales in completely dismissive way over S4C, and the other cuts also put the future of our communties in doubt, we'll be encouraging everyone in the rally Saurday to say no to Cameron and his Lib Dem poodle's lies, who are just puppets in the pockets of banks and neo-liberal thinking which has made such a mess of things over the last decade.""We will be calling on every community in the country, after the rally Saturday, to start community groups against the cuts, to fight for a better future for the Welsh language and everyone in our communities."
Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg added:"We're coming out against the cuts the Government has forced on us. In the same way We will also be supporting the brave stance of those who are facing fines and court cases for standing up against the Government's Language law, which, unless changes are made, will not make a real difference for the language. In face of the cuts which will effect Welsh language services people need, more than ever before, a law which will ensure that they can live their lives through the medium of Welsh.""Therefore, I hope we will all come together, regionally and nationally, to oppose the cuts to challenge that's ignoring us."Speaking at the protest, Hywel Williams MP will say:"The government has rushed to cut S4C's funding without a single thought about the effect on viewers and the people employed in the television industry. It's not just programmes, but also hundreds of local jobs which are at risk. So we are here to protest about the cuts to S4C but also about the cuts to other vital public services. North Wales will be hit harder as we have so many people employed by local councils, the health service and by government from Cardiff and London. We should all join together to resist this vicious hard right Tory Liberal Democrat government. It could not be made plainer how out of touch these people are with the lives of real people."
