Campaigners welcome confirmation that second language Welsh qualification is to be abolished by 2021

Language campaigners have welcomed Alun Davies' announcement that "second language Welsh" qualifications will be phased out by 2021, with a single comprehensive qualification taking its place. Responding to a question by Sian Gwenllian AM yesterday, the minister for the Welsh language said a period of "transition" will lead to second language Welsh being "replaced" in 2021.

Toni Schiavone, chair of Cymdeithas' education group, said:

"We welcome this important announcement. Now we need a worthy investment of resources, and extensive training programs, in order to move effectively to the new regime, where the Welsh language is one subject for all. Of course, we will keep a close watch on the government, it is essential they keep to the timetable of phasing out these failing qualifications by 2021. But there is now a firm commitment from Alun Davies, and in welcoming that we will refrain from direct action against the Welsh Government and Qualifications Wales. With this commitment as a basis, we will meet and correspond with them to see that these plans come to fruition.

"I would like to thank the hundreds of people who have supported this campaign by coming to rallies, taking direct action, signing petitions, and supported us financially. The campaign is not over - the next step is our annual rally calling for Welsh-medium education for all, next Saturday in Llangefni. We will continue to work, and your support will still be needed, until every young person in Wales leaves school able to speak Welsh. "
