Following the release of the report by Carmarthenshire Council's Working Group on the Welsh language today Cymdeithas yr Iaith has welcomed a number of the recommendations but has emphasised that the Council itself must now ensure these recommendations are accepted and implemented in order to make a difference to the people of Carmarthenshire.
Sioned Elin, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith in Carmarthenshire said:
"Looking at the recommendations it becomes clear that it would make a significant difference to the language in Carmarthenshire. The report sets an aim that the Welsh language becomes the language of administration for the County Council over time. This is something we have called for, and see its importance as the County Council is a major employer in the county, it would give a clear message and show an example to other organisations, institutions and businesses not only in Carmarthenshire but across Wales.”
"Although Carmarthenshire saw the biggest decline in the number of Welsh speakers in the census, there is an opportunity through this report for the Council to show that they are taking the Welsh language seriously, and an opportunity to lead the way for the rest of Wales. In light of this we expect to see the Council act urgently on the recommendations without delay.”
"For this reason Cymdeithas yr Iaith has already announced our intention to hold a party on the Council's stand at the National Eisteddfod in the Summer. We are confident we will be celebrating the Council implementation of these recommendations so we can ensure the future of Welsh as a living language in Carmarthenshire."
