Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has welcomed Powys Council education chief’s recommendation to keep Ysgol Carno open as part of her school reorganisation plans in the county.
Following an informal consultation with the local community, a report by Councillor Myfanwy Alexander - the council cabinet education portfolio holder - recommends a federation between Ysgol Carno, Ysgol Llanbrynmair and Ysgol Glantwymyn, instead of closing it.
Ffred Ffransis, Welsh language campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg’s education spokesperson, commented:
“I would like to congratulate the community on their efforts to keep the school open and for giving hope to communities across Wales. Local people feel strongly that the school is very important to the Welsh language in the area. They have inspired us in Cymdeithas yr Iaith as we have worked with them locally, to such an extent that we are holding our annual rally in the village on the 5th October this year. We assume the council cabinet will accept the recommendations of the report which they are discussing next week. Our hope is that communities across Wales can learn from the success of the Carno campaigners.”
