Following a consultation, Carmarthenshire County Council will discuss changing the language category of Llangennech school, near Llanelli, in an Education and Scrutiny Committee meeting on May 23rd.

The consultation proposes that the school change from a dual stream to a Welsh school.

Sioned Elin, chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith in Carmarthenshire said:

"At the moment there is an English and a Welsh stream and as it stands only children in the Welsh stream leave school able to speak Welsh fluently. English, naturally, is the main language of children the English stream. Having two streams might give parents a choice in which language their children will receive their education, but their children's choices will be confined in the future. It would deprive them of employment opportunities and the ability to communicate confidently in Welsh.

"Children will never lose the ability to speak English – we live in a society that favours the English language, but there is a risk that children may not get a firm grasp of the Welsh language."
