Further evidence of need for planning guidelines on the Welsh language.

Following news that a planning application for 61 houses in Llandovery has been given the go-ahead, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has expressed further concern that TAN 20 guidelines have yet to be published.

Sioned Elin of Cymdeithas yr Iaith said:

“It's concerning that Carmarthenshire council has given the green light to another development. Having spoken with a local group opposing this plan, it's clear that consideration has not been given to the Welsh language or to the effect on the community. Between the lack of jobs and the secondary school closing the fact that only 20% of the houses will be affordable strongly suggests that these houses are not for local people.  The Government needs to release the TAN 20 planning guidance -  local authorities need for stronger guidance when it comes to the Welsh language in planning.

"It's ironic that the Government announced earlier this year its intention to create a Commission to look at the state of the language in the county, while at the same time their delay in publishing these guidelines is causing harm to the language. We went with campaigners from Penybanc who are opposing a similar development in their village.  We will be highlighting at the Eisteddfod the need for stronger and clearer guidelines so the planning system works in favour of the Welsh language and not against it. Young members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith will hold a treasure hunt to find the TAN 20 planning policy."
