Welsh Education in Pembrokeshire - time to act

As Pembrokeshire County Council discussed the finding of a recent consultation on Welsh medium education in the county Bethan Williams, Dyfed Area Officer for Cymdeithas yr Iaith said:

“There aren't any specific recommendations regarding Welsh medium education from today's discussion, just that the cabinet have noted the findings of the consultation, a consultation the council had to do as part of their Welsh Education Strategical Plan. And those findings are not far-reaching, and only mean that it may be easier to choose Welsh medium education.

The fact that 74% of respondents want to see better Welsh medium provision is significant. And from speaking with parents in the in the county who have lived in Pembrokeshire all their lives but haven't had any Welsh medium education it is clear that they feet they have missed out – in term of work and culture; and they don't want the same to be true for their children. Its clear then that the council needs to act.

“What we need to see is a clear plan to move schools along a continuum, increasing the Welsh language provision of all schools so that every pupil across the county can have part of their education through the language in order to be able to use it day to day and in work.”
