High Sheriff of Dyfed to open a meeting to discuss the Welsh language

For the first time ever an event hosted by language campaigners Cymdeithas yr Iaith will be officially opened by a royal appointee !

Carmarthenshire broadcaster and High Sheriff of Dyfed Elinor Jones will offially open a forum "Tynged yr Iaith" (Fate of the Language) hosted by Cymdeithas at St Peters Hall Carmarthen at 10.30am Saturday 17th January. Following the mega-party at the National Eisteddfod field in Llanelli last August to celebrate the fact that Carmarthenshire County Council had unanimously adopted a new language strategy, it was decided to hold this forum early in the new year to review whether the Council was keeping to its commitment. Council officers and elected members (including Coun Cefin Campbell Plaid Cymru and Coun Calum Higgins Labour) have agreed to attend to give evidence.

Sioned Elin, regional Chair of Cymdeithas said "No-one can doubt Elinor Jones' commitment to the future of the Welsh language, and we are very pleased that she has agreed to open our forum. This emphasises that it is an inclusive campaign as the language is the heritage of all of us"
