At lunchtime today, Cymdeithas yr Iaith have sent a team of inspectors into Carmarthenshire Coungil HQ in Carmarthen to find out whether or not the Council itself is setting an example in promoting the Welsh Language. The inspectors are asking staff during their lunchtime break to what extent they are carrying out their work in Welsh.

In a meeting today (Saturday 18th of January), members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith decided that the Government had failed to act on 5 out of 6 policy demands the organisation set out 6 months ago. The 6 points are: Welsh-medium Education for All - the meeting heard that the government will not consider revising the Second Language Welsh curriculum for a further year.

Over 200 protestors gathered in Bangor today to demonstrate against Morrisons supermarket today after the company refused to give a family’s son a prescription because it was written in Welsh.    Among the speakers at the protest were the local MP for Arfon Hywel Williams, Councillor Sian Gwenllian, and Sian Howys from Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has warned that the Government’s new language standards - regulations which will place duties on bodies to provide services in Welsh - could offer worse Welsh language services to the public.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith has accused Ceredigion Council of wasting time and money with spurious public consultations which are claimed to be no more than "exercises in ticking boxes".

Cymdeithas yr Iaith have dismissed the consultation process over Carmarthenshire Council's budget as "at best irrelevant, and in fact damaging to the future of the Welsh language and Welsh-speaking communities in the county."   Cymdeithas area officer for Dyfed, Bethan Williams said:

Members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith and campaigners for village schools under threat in Ceredigion came together at Ceredigion Council Headquarters in Aberystwyth to protest against what they call the twin "serial school closers" of ESTYN and Ceredigion LEA.
