Welsh language campaigner, Jamie Bevan was sentenced to 35 days in prison by Merthyr Tydfil magistrates this morning for refusing to pay a fine he was ordered to pay in English-only. 50 people came to support Jamie outside Merthyr Tydfil magistrate Court.

MERTHYR council faces an official reprimand after being branded "a complete farce" by Welsh language campaigners in a complaint to the local government watchdog, after it launched an English-only website. In a letter to the Public Service Ombudsman, members of campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) have accused the local authority of consistent and severe breaches of its legally-binding language scheme.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has declared its support for a number of Welsh musicians as they go on strike for three days.Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith said:"Not only do we want powers for broadcasting transferred here to Wales but we want a Welsh model that prioritises and makes the most of our communities. We are currently calling on a cross-section of politicians and people within the industry to support our calls by singing our declaration. The fact that Wales is considered a region within the broadcasting industry still raises issues such as these.

Several prominent Welsh people have signed a petition calling on the Government to halt local housing plans in an effort to strengthen the Welsh language.Among the people who have signed the petition are writers Dewi Prysor, Catrin Dafydd, Angharad Blythe and Dr Mererid Hopwood, and musicians Geraint Lovgreen, Steve Eaves, Ceri Cunnington, Lleuwen Steffan, a Gwyneth Glyn.
