Following Ceredigion County Council's Cabinet's decision today to publish a statutory notice to close Ysgol Llangynfelyn in North Ceredigion, Bethan Williams, Dyfed organiser for Cymdeithas yr Iaith said:
"We congratulate parents, children and the community of Llangynfelyn on their persistent campaign to keep the school open. Many of the families have moved to the area, but they have become an active part of the community, and the school is their main contact with the Welsh language and culture.

In view of increasing rumour that Ceredigion County Council is holding confidential discussions with developers to allow a large number of houses on the site of Llandysul schools, Cymdeithas yr Iaith has called on the Council to “open its doors” and conduct a public meeting to ask the views of the town's people on how to develop the site to ensure services and employment for local people rather than housing for newcomers

Ceredigion members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith have welcomed the fact that Ceredigion Ceredigion Council has voted to keep a condition requiring language impact assessments of specific developments. The campaigners also called on the Welsh Government to provide clearer planning guidelines.

Planning legislation was passed recently that establishes the Welsh language a statutory consideration but the Government has not yet issued guidelines to explain how to implement the new law.
